Staying Inspired in the New Year with @ladysamantharay

When Katie and I sit down every month to plan YYC In Style, we're always trying to figure out the best ways that we can present the CB community to you. This month, we wanted to showcase one of our consignors that truly inspires us. So... we decided that it was necessary to feature an individual that encompasses everything CB and more.

PC: Matthew Hamilton

Enter Sam, apart from being one of the most positive women we've ever met, she's been shopping with us since the beginning, inspiring us to implement her empowering attitude by spreading kindness within the community. She's organized, creative (in more ways than one), incredibly quirky, and true to herself - inspiring others to do the same in order to reach their goals. This month, Sam talks planning goals for the new year (even though it's already almost February - but hey, that's our style, we say better late than never!), resources that can keep you motivated and how to be kind to yourself in the process.

K: Where do you recommend 'The CB Babes' look in order to gain more encouragement and inspiration when it comes to goal setting (i.e. quotes, public speakers, etc.)?

S: When it comes to goal setting, I’m inspired when it feels like my soul is on fire. When I’m scrolling through Instagram or listening to a podcast I have lots of moments where I feel like, "I’m going to do this and nothing can stop me!" But when I’m feeling unmoored and don’t know what my goals are, I always come back to one quote: “Be the change you wish to see in the world” - Gandhi.

K: You talk a lot about the importance of self-care and how it’s vital in sustaining a happy and healthy life. What does self-care look like for you and how can we apply it to our lives when we’re busy trying to achieve our goals?

S: If you’re not taking care of yourself, you're not going to be able to reach your goals. Period. When we are not at our best we can’t DO our best. So if you’re only operating at 70% because you’re staying up late, eating too much fast food, and not moving your body then, HELLO! You can only get to, at most, 70% of your goal! Self-care is number one. But it’s not all bubble baths and pedicures (though I really love those) self-care is taking care of your long-term self. You need to take care of YOU. Just like if you’re looking at your daughter/niece/sister/bff and saying, "woah girl, you do not need another Prosecco, you need to get your finances in order, eat some vegetables, and go to bed early." Take care of yourself so that you can get out there and achieve those goals at 100%!

K: For your own goals for 2020 (yes, we definitely creeped your social media @ladysamantharay), you’ve said that you want to "use your voice." What does that look like?

S: Thank you for being part of my social world. I love connecting there. I hope that I’m putting stuff out there that people actually find valuable and that speaks to them. I am working really hard to ‘use my voice’ to do good. In the past, I have mimicked what other people have said instead of using my own voice. I have stayed quiet when I wanted to shout. I have shied away from putting myself out there and letting myself be seen. No more. I am realizing the power of my authentic voice and sharing my vulnerable self.

I’ve lived three lifetimes and I am only 34 years old, so I feel like there are some things that I have learned and I think those lessons could be useful for people. I’ve fought hard to break out of tough situations (divorce, mental health, self-image, financial struggles), started from scratch, and changed the way I see myself. If my speaking up can make that journey easier for someone else, I’ll do it.

K: You’ve been shopping at The Clothing Bar since I’ve worked here (going on three years!) Have you always been a consignment fanatic?

S: By shopping at a consignment store, we get to have an impact on our planet while doing something FUN! Also, I like that it changes the shopping experience. It takes me away from just being focused on trends and really lets me be creative and focus on my own personal style. The Clothing Bar has done something special for Calgary. It has made consignment shopping so cool. I want to brag about my consigned shirt for $10. I want to brag about the fact that I gave a Mackage handbag a second life. I want to brag that all of my jeans are from The Clothing Bar. So yeah, maybe I have always been a fanatic.

K: What is it about The Clothing Bar that has made you become a loyal 'CB Babe'?

S: Since the moment I walked into The Clothing Bar, I felt the vibe of women supporting women with acceptance and no judgment. I was so impressed that Katie (a freaking powerhouse business owner) had partnered and worked with local female-owned businesses. She opened her doors and created opportunities for other female business owners to also succeed - I had never seen that in Calgary.

I’m watching the world change and shift to one where women empower women. The Clothing Bar is creating a strong community. I love it - can we get a club name? Let’s make t-shirts! The CB is walking the walk and I love being a part of it. I want a shopping experience where I feel empowered and loved and a part of a bigger community and celebrated and congratulated and doing it in a way that’s good for people and good for the planet and (Sam, take a breath) OK, yeah, I’m just super here for everything that The CB is doing. Thank you, you ladies are amazing. I can’t say enough nice things.

It was a pleasure featuring Sam this month for YYC In Style! We know you'll enjoy her incredible attitude and empowering spirit as much as we do. Well, I'm signing off now, *turns on Sam's song suggestions and moonwalks out of the room*
